How to Make a Simple Initial Grapevine Wreath…

Please note that I literally planned and picked out the material for this wreath in less than five minutes while grocery shopping this week. (All my supplies were from Walmart, but I have a list of suggestions below, too.) I also had a few items in my craft stash at home. My goal is always to stay under $10 or so when I make wreaths for the simple fact we live in the country…a “normal” gust of wind for us could blow any porch decorations to the next county. I don’t want to lose a lot of money if damage occurs. 🙂

List of supplies:

  • Grapevine wreath (I used an 18-inch wreath)
  • Letter (initial)
  • Acrylic Paint
  • Paint brush*
  • Burlap ribbon with wider weave*
  • Ribbon (1 1/2-inch grosgrain)
  • Floral wire, if desired*
  • Optional add-ons like dried flowers, silk flowers, other ribbon, etc.*
  • Hot glue gun & glue*

*These are items I already owned, so they aren’t figured into the final cost of the wreath.

Here are the steps to creating your very own Simple Initial Grapevine Wreath:

  1. Purchase your wreath, initial, paint, and ribbon. I wanted a simple design, but you could also add silk flowers to the wreath if you prefer.
  2. Paint the initial and let dry. Add a second coat (at least) of paint on all sides, especially if this will be outside. If you see in the picture, I couldn’t decide what color to paint the initial. Our daughter liked one color, and I liked another. So…you might want to experiment, too. The paint cost me $.50 for each color, so I didn’t mind trying both to see which I liked better. The more coats of paint on the letter, the more durable! I used wax paper while painting, not only to protect my work surface, but also to keep the painted letter from sticking to anything. Also, I ended up adding three coats of paint to my initial. 🙂
  3. Wrap the wreath with the burlap ribbon. How closely you wrap the ribbon and how much of the grapevine shows is completely up to you. I wanted mostly grapevine to show for a simpler wreath. However, this is your project…do what makes YOU happy! 🙂 I then hot glued the ends of the burlap on the back side of the wreath.simple initial grapevine wreath
  4. Make a ribbon bow, if you want. I decided not to include a large bow, but I found a great tutorial on YouTube here. Using the floral wire to put the bow together also gives you something to securely attach the bow to the wreath. We are going for durability here because every bit of strengthening helps!
  5. Attach the initial using hot glue. Please be careful, here! Hot glue is HOT! Placement of the initial is personal preference. Some people like it on the side, others in the center, and some suspend the initial in the middle of the wreath. Whatever you choose is perfect! (I considered using staples and floral wire to attach the letter, but the wreath was flat enough to hold the letter with glue in the area where I wanted it.)
  6. Add hanger to wreath. If your wreath didn’t come with a hanger, simply make a loop with the grosgrain ribbon and tie it tightly around the wreath. You could also use a loop of the floral wire. It just depends on the look you’re going for, and if you want the hanger to show.
  7. Decorate wreath as desired. After I finished the wreath, I was unhappy with how bare it looked. So I dug through my craft stuff and found a few sprigs of eucalyptus and some pine cones. I think these simple additions make a nice spray on the side of the wreath.simple initial grapevine wreath
